Dr Kleyn is Director of the Brain-Skin Unit, Centre for Dermatology Research and for 15 years has been one of five Consultant Dermatologists who lead the tertiary Greater Manchester Psoriasis Service. Dr Kleyn’s research which has received several national awards, focuses on the 'brain-skin' axis in health and disease as well as health inequalities, atopic dermatitis and safety of therapies. She is an invited national and international speaker and serves on key committees. These include the British Association of Dermatologists Biologics and Immunomodulators Register (BADBIR) steering committee; Medical and Research Committee for the Psoriasis Association as well as Academic Lead for Psychodermatology UK. Dr Kleyn is an International Psoriasis Council (IPC) councillor where she is Fellowship Committee Co-Chair and a member of its Diverse Skin Types Working Group. She has twice received an Outstanding IPC Councillor Award. She is the University of Manchester appointed Governor for the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Alia Ahmed is a UK‑trained Consultant Dermatologist and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, specialising in the care of adults and children with skin, hair and nail conditions. With dual training in dermatology and psychology, she is recognised for her expertise in psychodermatology, focusing on the relationship between skin disease, stress, and emotional wellbeing. She works in a specialist psychodermatology service at the Royal London Hospital and chairs a virtual multidisciplinary meeting for complex cases.
After graduating from Barts and The London School of Medicine in 2008, Dr Ahmed completed dermatology training in London, including a dedicated research fellowship in psychodermatology, and was appointed consultant in 2017. She recently secured a major British Skin Foundation grant to advance research in this field.
Alongside her NHS practice, Dr Ahmed is a Visiting Lecturer in Psychodermatology at the University of Hertfordshire and has undertaken a research fellowship with the UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network. Dr Taylor has a specialist interest and expertise in psychodermatology. Together with dermatology colleague Professor Bewley she established and continues to work in the joint multidisciplinary tertiary psychodermatology team at the Royal London Hospital. The clinic is involved in clinical research in psychodermatology particularly looking at treatment approaches for primary psychiatric disorders which present in dermatology. Dr Taylor also has both a clinical and research interest in somatisation, medically unexplained symptom syndromes, conversion and dissociative disorders. Dr Taylor teaches on the MSc in Mind and Skin at the University of Hertfordshire. Dr Taylor previously co-chaired Psychodermatology UK an organisation which seeks to promote understanding of the interface area between psychiatry and dermatology and improve services for patients, and training for staff, as well as stimulating research in this field. In this context, she and her research group were the first to demonstrate the activation of skin mast cells by neuropeptides in the context of stress and atopic dermatitis-like inflammation. She contributes her interdisciplinary expertise to the development of guidelines for the AWMF (Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany), including as the initiator the S3 guideline for "Psychosomatic Dermatology". Within the European Society for Dermatology and Psychiatry (ESDaP), Prof. Poot has played a central role in advancing the organization’s mission. Prof. Poot previously headed the Department of Dermatology at CNDG Gosselies, Belgium (1979–2014), where she established a reputation for excellence in clinical dermatology and medical education. Her outstanding achievements were recognized with the prestigious Herman Musaph Award in 2011.
Her key research and clinical interests include chronic dermatologic diseases such as alopecia areata, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis.
